20 May 2025 Export surplus of 17.7 billion euros registered in trade with the United States in 1^st quarter of 2025

Germany has recorded an export surplus in trade with the United States each year for over three decades. Germany also recorded a considerable export surplus at the start of 2025, and therefore before the entry into force of higher tariffs on exports to the United States: In the 1^st quarter of 2025, Germany exported goods to the value of 41.2 billion euros to the United States and imported goods to the value of 23.5 billion euros from the US. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that exports to the United States therefore exceeded imports from the US by almost 75%. At 17.7 billion euros, Germany's export surplus in the trade of goods with the US was the highest among all its trading partners in the 1^st quarter of 2025. It was 4.8 billion euros higher than the surplus with France, the country with which Germany has the second biggest export surplus (12.8 billion euros). In the 1^st quarter of 2024, the foreign trade balance (exports minus imports) with the United States stood at +16.7 billion euros. At the time, the export surplus was 3.2 billion euros higher than that recorded with France in second place (13.5 billion euros).
