393,000 nursing professionals for 17.2 million hospital patients
WIESBADEN – The Nursing Care Day on 12 May is celebrated in memory of the birthday of the British nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the pioneer of modern nursing care. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that true to her principles, 393,000 nursing professionals in Germany provided nursing care for 17.2 million persons treated in hospital on a full-inpatient basis in 2007.
Of the paramedical professionals working in hospitals, 46% are regarded as nursing staff. Among others, there are 318,000 nurses (male and female), 38,000 paediatric nurses and 18,000 auxiliary nurses among the 393,000 nursing professionals.
