WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, some 790,000 children started school in Germany at the beginning of the current school year 2007/08, that was a decrease by 3,600 (–0.5%) on the previous year. A further decrease in the number of school beginners by about 12% is expected by the year 2015. While the number of school beginners in the new Länder will remain roughly unchanged, a decrease by about 14% is expected for the former territory of the Federal Republic in that period.
