Population

The population of the Federal Republic of Germany encompasses all the inhabitants whose usual place of residence is within the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, i.e. it includes all the foreigners registered in this territory. The Federal Republic of Germany is a densely populated country. Approximately 82 million inhabitants live here, which corresponds to a population density of 230 persons per square kilometre.

Germany has 81.8 million inhabitants. Really?

As it is 24 years already that the last population census was taken in Germany and the figures we use today have been updated from 1987, the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder will conduct the 2011 Census with reference date 9 May 2011. Only about one third of the population will be asked to provide information for the "register-based" procedure to be used in Germany for the first time by means of which official statistics will put the data basis in our country on a firm footing.

Slight decline in the number of private households after 2025

The total number of private households in Germany is predicted to increase by about one million to 41 million by 2025. After that, the trend will be reversed. As the new household projection until 2030 reveals, the tendency towards more one-person and two-person households will initially result in a higher number of households over the next fifteen years, despite the expected population decrease. Then a point will be reached where the decrease in the population is no longer compensated for by the “fragmentation” of households. From the mid- 2020s onwards, the number of private households can therefore be expected to decline slightly by about 125,000.

Development of births

There were about 678,000 children born in Germany in 2010, 13,000 more than 2009. The average number of children per woman in 2010 was 1.39.
