Migration from eastern to western Germanycontinues to fall
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the Day of German Unification, 137,200 people moved from the new Länder to the old Länder in 2005 (2004: 146,400), while 88,200 people chose to move in the opposite direction (2004: 94,700). This means that the new Länder recorded a net loss of about 49,000 persons through out-migration (2004: 51,700). The migration from eastern to western Germany thus continued to decrease, though slightly.
