Retail turnover in Germanyin January 2009: –1.3% in real terms to January 2008


WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), retail turnover in January 2009 in Germany decreased 1.2 % in nominal terms and 1.3% in real terms compared with the corresponding month in the previous year. The number of days open for sale was 26 in January 2009 and 26 in January 2008, too.
 
When adjusted for calendar and seasonal variations (CENSUS-X-12-ARIMA), the January turnover was in nominal terms 0.5% and in real terms 0.6% smaller than that of December 2008.
 
Methodical notes:
Starting with reference month January 2009, retail trade statistics has been switched to the 2008 edition of the national classification of economic activities (Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige – WZ) and to base year 2005. Long time series recalculated for the months from January 1994 to December 2008 and containing values according to the new classification of economic activities and for the new base year 2005 are now available free of charge in the GENESIS-Online database. The results for January 2009 will also be available in the GENESIS-Online database in about 14 days.
