Labour market
Transport patterns of commuters are the subject of an additional programme of the microcensus, which is covered every four years, and last time for 2008. What is measured is the distance from home to the place of work, the time spent and the means of transport mainly used (i. e. for the longest part of the way). Persons covered by the survey were not only persons in employment but also pupils and students, who were asked how they cover the distance to their school or university. Unlike the basic programme of the microcensus, answering the questions on commuting patterns is voluntary: Valid information is available for some 90% of the persons in employment and about 85% of the pupils and students (when extrapolated, 34.6 million persons in employment (89.2%) and 12.2 million pupils and students (84.7%)). However, this hardly impairs the information value of the results.
