Labour market

Labour market statistics

Labour force participation plays a central part in our society, and with its functions of securing a livelihood, assigning the individual a position within the structure of society, for economic growth and welfare it comes into the picture in many areas. There is as much diversity in official labour market statistics and its sources.

Key figures of official statistics on the German labour market you will find here.

Labour market statistics at the Federal Statistical Office focuses on monitoring the overall system of employment statistics in Germany. On the one hand, employment accounts are used for that purpose. They serve to determine, among others, the number of persons in employment in Germany, which is the central reference value and operand for a number of ratios such as the unemployment rate or the labour force participation rate. They also supply information on commuters and the volume of work. Labour market statistics according to the concept of the International Labour Organization (ILO) presents different ratios relating to unemployment, persons in employment and the labour force in a coherent system and is also comparable internationally. A multitude of information for instance on labour force participation, the distribution of persons in employment among industries and occupations, on the work and the level of qualification may be determined by means of the labour force survey. All statistics permit separate analyses for men and women, for individual age groups and industries. Depending on the statistics, more detailed figures are calculated and published, too.

Other relevant labour market statistics of the Federal Statistical Office are the statistics on public service personnel, on earnings and labour costs.

The numbers of registered unemployed, of employees subject to social security contributions and persons performing marginal part-time work, and of vacancies are collected by the Federal Employment Agency.
