Place-to-place index numbers

Public officials and soldiers sent abroad receive cost-of-living allowances according to the Federal Civil Service Remuneration Act (Article 55, para. 1) enabling them to buy the same quantity of goods and services as in Germany with their remuneration. At duty stations with a high price level, they get a bonus in addition to their salary, while in the case of very low prices, a deduction is applied. The cost-of-living allowance is a percentage divisible by five and is fixed on the basis of place-to-place index numbers. The Federal Statistical Office is obliged by the Federal Civil Service Remuneration Act (Article 55, para. 2) to calculate and publish such place-to-place index numbers.
