Information on the regular adaptation of the consumer price index

In consumer price statistics, the changeover to a new base year is performed every five years. Base year 2005 was introduced on 29 February 2008. It involved a recalculation of the results from January 2005.

The regular adaptation of the consumer price index focuses on updating the weighting pattern for the goods and services, using new data on the consumer habits of households. The new weighting pattern will refer to 2005 and will remain constant until the next regular adaptation. In contrast, the sample of goods and services for which prices are collected to calculate the index (“basket of goods and services”) is continuously adjusted. In this way, the current range of products is taken account of.

This table provides you with a comparison of consumer price indices base year 2000 and 2005 from January 2005.
