More building permits for dwellings in 2009 compared with the previous year

Press release No. 106 / 2010-03-17  In 2009, the first year-on-year rise in building permits for dwellings was observed since 2006. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), building permits for a total of 178,000 dwellings were granted in Germany in 2009. Compared with the corresponding period of 2008, this was an increase of 1.9% or 3,300.

Turnover in book retail trade declining a real 1.6% in 2009 on 2008

Press release No. 107 / 2010-03-17  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the Leipzig Book Fair, which will open its doors tomorrow, real turnover in book retail trade in Germany declined 1.6% in 2009 on 2008. After several years which had been characterised by turnover increases, this was the third year in a row when real turnover decreased in book retail trade. In 2007 and 2008, the latter recorded a year-on-year decline in real turnover of 0.1% and 2.7%, respectively.

Newly published: Car, bus and railway: Mobility has its price

Consumers in Germany spend a considerable part of their expenditure budget on being mobile. In 2005, the base year of consumer price statistics, consumption expenditure on car, bus and railway accounted for some 13% of total consumption expenditure of households. The prices of purchasing a car, petrol, bus tickets, railway tickets and many other items of "transport" in 2009 were an average 8.3% higher than in 2005.
