In the Spotlight

Germany in the European Union
English-language edition of "Im Blickpunkt: Deutschland in der EU 2006"

Germany in the European Union
How does Germany fare statistically in comparison to its European neighbours? Which country’s economy is growing most rapidly? Which Member State spends most on its educational system? Are all European societies ageing at the same rate? Which country has the highest level of female employment? Who spends most on public health per capita? Which governments are managing to consolidate public finances?

During the German EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2007, Germany’s position within the European Union will be of particular public interest. The new publication “Germany in the EU 2006” offers objective information based on official European statistical data (source: Eurostat) on topics such as population, living conditions, education and research, employment, economy, energy and sustainable growth. The publication particularly focuses on the topics covered by the EU Lisbon Strategy, which are described using the so-called structural indicators. Bar charts and tables illustrate the areas in which Germany is among the leading EU Member States and those where further effort is required.
Published in December 2006.

Women in Germany 2006

Women in Germany

In important fields of social life in Germany women are still not yet represented according to their share in total population. Women's approach to life planning is often different from that of men. Women tend to choose different jobs and university majors than their male contemporaries. If there are children to be looked after, it is in most cases the mothers who cut back on their employment in order to reconcile family and job responsibilities.
At the beginning of the 16th legislative period of the German Bundestag an intense discussion has begun about how to make our society more family-friendly and how to ensure equal opportunities by creating conditions that enable men and women to reconcile family life with work obligations more easily.

How will women's life expectancy evolve in the next few decades? What jobs or majors do women choose in contrast to men? Is it true that part-time work is purely a women's domain? Do women earn less than men in the same job and, if yes, why? Women are gainfully employed to a smaller extent than men, so what about women's financial situation? Are women sick more frequently than men? How do women participate in public life?

These are just some of the aspects dealt with in the broad thematic range of this book, which is to contribute to a comprehensive presentation of women's current life circumstances in Germany.
