Energy consumption In 2009 total primary energy consumption (not temperature-adjusted) was down 5.2% compared 2008, which was mainly due to the slowdown in economic activities as a result of the worldwide economic and financial crisis. From 2000 to 2008, energy consumption in Germany stagnated at about the same level. in 2009 it decreased 4.7% on 2000. The consumption of the industries in that period was down 5.8%, while private households recorded a somewhat smaller decrease (-2.5%). Until 2006 the level of energy consumption by households was slightly above the level of 2000. Since 2007 a trend towards lower consumption has been observed.
