Crafts enterprises and businesses engaged in craft-related trades are active in almost all sectors of the economy. They are part not only of the industry but also, for instance, of distributive trade and the services sector.




 

The Crafts Sector

In 2008 a total of 577,000 enterprises were active in the German crafts sector. As the Federal Statistical Office further reports, these enterprises realised a turnover of 471.3 billion Euro. On 31 December 2008 about 4.9 million persons were employed by crafts entrepreneurs. Almost 3.6 million of them were employed subject to social insurance contribution. About 750,000 were employed in marginal employment.

According to provisional data, turnover in crafts with compulsory approval in Germany rose 5.7% in the third quarter of 2011 compared with the third quarter of 2010. Also, at the end of September 2011, the number of persons working in crafts with compulsory approval was up 0.2% against the end of September 2010.
