Proportion of businesses selling online has doubled

The proportion of businesses in Germany that sell products or services not only through conventional distribution channels but also through the internet or other computer-based networks rose significantly in 2009. Almost every fourth business (23%) used the potentials of the internet for distribution purposes, which means that the proportion more than doubled within a year (2008: 11%).

 

The share of German enterprises purchasing online compared to other EU countries

According to a European comparison covering only enterprises with 10 or more persons employed, the share of enterprises in Germany that purchase via the internet or other computer networks is well above average. In 2009, this share stood at 43% and was clearly above the EU-27 average of 28% so that Germany was among the top group in Europe. The proportion of enterprises purchasing online was highest in Norway (57%), whereas only 4% of all enterprises in Bulgaria purchased goods or services electronically in 2009.

 

Information and communication technology (ICT): China is most important trading partner for ICT imports

China’s enormous importance and potential for development as a trading partner of Germany, especially for German imports, are illustrated by the following key figures: Since 2004 China’s top position as the most important import country for ICT--information and communication technologies goods has been confirmed (25.7%). For 2008 China showed a market share of as much as 33.5% for German ICT--information and communication technologies imports. In 2000 China had ranked behind the United States, Japan and the Netherlands.
