What does the indicator describe?
he index of orders received measures the monthly development of demand for construction work at local units of the building industry proper. What is calculated is value indices of the nominal development and volume indices to represent the development of demand adjusted for price changes. Because of its monthly periodicity, its early availability and its detailed breakdown by building construction and civil and underground engineering as well as by individual construction branches (e.g. housing construction, road construction), the index is a central and up-to-date leading indicator of the economic trend in the building industry.
How is the indicator calculated?
hat is considered as orders received is the orders for construction work received and definitely accepted by local units in the last calendar month in accordance with the general conditions applicable to construction work, excluding turnover (value added) tax. The orders received are collected from about 7,000 local units in the building industry all over Germany by the statistical offices of the Länder as part of the monthly construction reports. The results refer to local units with generally 20 or more employees. On the basis of the Länder results, the Federal Statistical Office calculates the monthly value and volume indices. Price adjustment is performed by means of suitable price index numbers for construction work. The results are represented for Germany base 2005=100.
When is the indicator released?
The monthly index of orders received is published in a press release about 50 days after the end of the reference month. On the same day, the detailed data are available via Internet. The release calendar and the press releases may be obtained from the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
How accurate is the indicator?
The up-to-date monthly indices of orders received are based on data from all local units in the building industry with more than 20 employees. What is published is final results.
