The monthly report provides information on the number of persons employed, remuneration, hours actually worked, as well as turnover and new orders received for local units of manufacturing and mining. Turnover and new orders received are distinguished each by domestic and non-domestic, including the non-euro area. Data on persons employed, turnover and orders received are broken down by kind-of-activity units. The results of the monthly report are used for short-term assessments of the economic situation and of region- and sector-related structural policies.
How are the data of the monthly report collected?
The monthly report in the area of manufacturing and mining is based on a decentralised statistics. The statistical offices of the Länder are responsible for collecting, checking and processing the data to obtain Länder results on a monthly basis. They transmit the aggregated Länder results to the Federal Statistical Office. The Federal Statistical Office's function in this process is to prepare and further advance that statistics in methodological terms and to aggregate the Länder results to obtain and finally publish results for the country as a whole. Local units in the area of manufacturing, mining and quarrying (industry, crafts including subsidiary crafts units) are responsible for providing information. The local unit is a production unit situated in a geographically identified place, incl. its dependent units located in the immediate surroundings. The type and number of kind-of-activity units depend on the production and on other economic activities performed by the local unit. Allocating units to the economic sectors of manufacturing as well as mining and quarrying is based on the Classification of Economic Activities, 2008 edition (WZ 2008). That national classification was derived from the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE Revision 2). Generally, all local units of the economic sectors of manufacturing as well as mining and quarrying with at least 50 persons employed are questioned.
When are the federal results of the monthly report released?
The results are published in a press release about 45 days after the end of the reference month. Both the release calendar and the relevant results are accessible on the Federal Statistical Office's website. Besides, detailed monthly data can be obtained through Subject-matter series 4, series 4.1.1 and are also accessible in the statistical information system Genesis-Online. Upon the so-called annual revision, series 4.1.1 is additionally published on an annual basis, containing the final annual data.
How accurate are the results of the monthly report?
The monthly report on local units is based on primary statistics. The data are collected in an exhaustive survey for which a cut-off threshold has been defined. To ensure a high data quality, detailed plausibility checks are regularly carried out by the statistical offices of the Länder. The data issued in press releases are provisional. Also, the results of the monthly report on local units which are published in the monthly Subject-matter series 4, series 4.1.1 and in the statistical information system Genesis-Online are of a preliminary nature. Final monthly and annual results are released upon the so-called annual revision. In the context of that revision, estimates which were added for late response are replaced by the actual data and, if required, corrected data are included as well. The final results are published in Genesis-Online in late April of the following year and, subsequently, in the annual Subject-matter series 4.1.1.
