Fewer eastern German children live together with siblings

WIESBADEN – In May 2003, approximately 69% of the 20.9 million children altogether in Germany lived together with at least one brother or sister in the same family. While the share of western German children with siblings has grown by a percentage point to 72% since 1996, that share has declined markedly by six percentage points to 59% in eastern Germany. This emerges from the most recent results of the microcensus, the largest annual household survey in Europe.
