Cardiovascular diseases most frequent cause of death again


WIESBADEN– As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 821,627 persons (385,940 men and 435,687 women) died in Germanyin 2006, according to results of the causes of death statistics. That was a decrease by 8,600 deaths or 0.1% compared with 2005.

As in the previous years, nearly every second death (149,578 men and 209,375 women) was caused by a disease of the cardiovascular system. Especially older people died from such diseases: Over 91% of the persons dying from such a disease were over 65 years old. As, on average, women reach older ages than men, they died more often from cardiovascular diseases. Myocardial infarction, which belongs to the group of cardiovascular diseases, was the cause for  64,796 deaths; 55% of them were men (35,631 deaths) and 45% were women (29,165 deaths).
