First release of data on the economic performance in the 3rd quarter of 2007

WIESBADEN – The upward trend of the German economy has further increased in the third quarter of 2007: The gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 0.7% in the third quarter of 2007 on the second quarter of 2007 upon price, seasonal and calendar adjustment. The GDP measures the value of the economic performance within the domestic territory. The economic performance in the first two quarters of 2007 grew 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, the GDP was up 2.4% (price-adjusted) and 2.5% (calendar adjusted) in the third quarter of 2007.

In a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter comparison, GDP growth in the third quarter of 2007 was based on domestic factors: Capital formation in machinery and equipment and in construction was up on the second quarter. Economic growth was also supported by a moderate increase in final consumption expenditure of households and NPISHs. Contrary to the second quarter, the balance of exports and imports did not contribute to growth, which is mainly due to a marked increase in imports.

The economic performance in the third quarter of 2007 was achieved by 39.9 million persons in employment, which was an increase of 632,000 persons or 1.6% on a year earlier.

In addition to the first calculation of data for the third quarter of 2007, the results regarding the use of the GDP for the first and second quarters of 2007 have slightly been revised because new statistical information has become available. However, this did not have any impact on the overall GDP data last published in August 2007 for the first and second quarter, which have remained unchanged.

The Federal Statistical Office will release more detailed results on 22 November 2007.
