Public assistance in 2006: 1.1 million persons receiving special benefits
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, about 1.1 million persons received benefits according to the 5th to 9th chapters of the Twelfth Volume of the Social Security Code (SGB XII on public assistance) in Germany in the course of 2006. Until the end of 2004, those benefits had been covered by the concept of “assistance in special circumstances”. The by far most important type of assistance included grants for integrating disabled persons. Grants of that type were received by 643,000 persons in the course of 2006. Assistance for nursing care played a considerable role in terms, too. In the course of 2006, about 366,000 persons received such assistance. On the whole, the public sector spent a net amount of about EUR 14.4 billion on benefits according to the 5th to 9th chapters of SGB XII (Public assistance) in 2006.
