3rd quarter of 2007: 1.6% more persons in employment than a year before

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office, the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany increased by 632,000 (+1.6%) in the third quarter of 2007 compared with a year earlier, reaching about 39,9 million persons. Job growth thus decreased slightly again in the third quarter of 2007, following large increases by 719,000 persons (+1.9%) and 672,000 persons (+1.7%) in the first and second quarter of 2007, respectively. That year-on-year decrease, however, must be considered in the context of a very positive employment trend in the third quarter of 2006 (basis-related effect).

Compared with the previous quarter, employment was up by 296,000 persons (+0.7%) in the third quarter of 2007. Although that increase was larger than the average of the previous three years (+254,000 persons), it was smaller than the strong increase in the third quarter of 2006 (+336,000 persons or +0.9%).
Upon seasonal adjustment, that is the elimination of seasonal fluctuations, the number of persons in employment in the third quarter of 2007 showed an increase by 98,000 persons or 0.2% compared with the previous quarter.

The contributions to job growth differed between the various economic sectors. A major share was provided by the service branches, where the number of persons in employment increased by a total of 496,000 persons (+1.7%) in the third quarter of 2007 compared with a year earlier. The industry (including energy), too, saw another year-on-year rise in employment by 109,000 persons (+1.4%) in the third quarter of 2007, following increases by 87,000 persons (+1.1%) in the second quarter and by 67,000 persons (+0.9%) in the first quarter. In construction, however, the increase in the number of persons in employment (+18,000 persons or +0.8%) in the reference quarter was markedly smaller than at the beginning of the year – in the first quarter of 2007 there was an increase by 106,000 persons (+5.2%). The employment increase in agriculture and forestry (+9,000 persons or +1.0%) in the reference quarter was about the same as in the previous quarter (+10,000 persons or +1.2%).

The year-on-year rise in employment was mainly due to the increase in the number of employees, which was up by 583,000 persons (+1.7%) in the third quarter of 2007, reaching 35.5 million persons. That rise, in turn, was based mainly on the further growth in jobs subject to social insurance contributions. The number of self-employed including family workers was up by 49,000 persons or 1.1% to about 4.5 million persons in employment in the reference quarter.

According to first provisional results of the Institute for Employment Research of the Federal Employment Agency, the number of hours worked per person in employment in the third quarter of 2007 was down by 0.1% to 362.6 hours from a year earlier. At the same time, the total number of hours worked – number of persons in employment multiplied by hours worked per person in employment – was up by 1.5% to 14.5 billion hours.

In addition to the first calculation of the number of persons in employment and of the number of hours worked for the third quarter of 2007, the results published so far have been revised, starting with the first quarter of 2007, as part of the regular revision of national accounts.

The current national accounts data on employment by quarters and years are available on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
