Consumption expenditure in 2007 strongly influenced by car purchases

WIESBADEN – Households in Germany increased their consumption expenditure by 1.2% in 2007; in 2006 the growth rate was 2.3%. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) with a view to the World Consumer Day on 15 March, consumption expenditure without private car purchases in 2007 rose 1.8%, following a 2.1% increase in 2006. This shows that the fluctuations in car purchases have a considerable impact on the trend of consumption expenditure of households.

According to national accounting results, households in Germany spent altogether just under EUR 1,375 billion in 2007, which was EUR 16,707 per inhabitant.

The disposable income of households increased by 1.6% (2006: +1.9%). The savings ratio was up from 10.5% in 2006 to 10.9% last year.
