2007: Public debt per inhabitant averaging EUR 18,880


WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the public budgets (Federation, Länder and municipalities/associations of municipalities including their extra budgets) recorded a total debt of EUR 1,553.1 billion at the end of 2007. Public debt thus was by 0.5% higher than at the end of the previous year. The largest part of public debt borrowed on the credit market, that is EUR 1,502.2 billion (+0.3% compared with the end of the previous year), is used to close the gaps between public expenditure and revenue; in addition, loans for strengthening cash resources amounting to EUR 50.9 billion were taken up to safeguard short-term liquidity (+5.3%). In mathematical terms, the per capita debt at the end of 2007 was EUR 18,880. The Federation had the largest share (EUR 11,637 per inhabitant), followed by the Länder (EUR 5,898 per inhabitant) and the municipalities/associations of municipalities (EUR 1,447 per inhabitant in non-city Länder).
