Good asparagus and strawberry harvests in 2008

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 2008 asparagus harvest was again very good, reaching an average 51 tonnes per hectare in the whole of Germany. Hence the yield of asparagus was 14% above the average of the past six years.

Despite the fact that the weather was not equally good in the country as a whole and was characterised by a cold spring, droughts and heavy rains in certain regions, very good harvests could be achieved again, in particular, by using increasingly plastic poly tunnels and partly irrigation systems.

In accordance with the voluntary harvest forecast of late June, the strawberry yield is expected to have reached a high level (about 119 tonnes per hectare), too. First estimates have shown an average increase in the yield per hectare of about 9% compared to the six-year average (from 2002 to 2007). Only in 1999, 2006 and 2007, similarly high yields per hectare were recorded for strawberries.
