Slight increase of employment figures

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of first calculations for June 2008, the number of persons in employment whose place of residence was in Germanyamounted to 40.20 million. That was an increase by 564,000 persons (+1.4%) on June last year. Compared with May 2008, the number of persons in employment rose by 35,000 (+0.1%) in June 2008.
So the trend of a slightly decelerating rise in employment continued, which was also observed in the last few months.

In June 2008, the number of persons in employment in Germanyamounted to 40.22 million after seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations. That was a slight seasonally adjusted increase by 10,000 persons on May 2008.

As part of the regular revision of national accounts, the monthly, quarterly and annual employment results published provisonally were also recalculated from the year 2004. All additional sources of employment statistics that had become available by the time of the current calculation were incorporated into the employment accounts. The recalculation affected in particular the employment figures for the months from November 2007. For that period, the figures relating to the development one year before had to be revised downwards by 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points. For the earlier revision period until October 2007, however, only small corrections of total employment figures had to be made.

Based on the labour force survey, Destatis determined a seasonally adjusted 3.17 million unemployed for June 2008. That figure, which is a provisional estimate, was calculated according to the concept of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Compared with the same month a year earlier (June 2007), the number of unemployed persons was down by 450,000 or 12.6%. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate – which is harmonised across the EU and measured as the share of unemployed in the total labour force – amounted to 7.3% in Germany and was thus considerably below the level of the corresponding month of the previous year (8.4%).

More results, including among others the original unemployment data which have not been seasonally adjusted, can be accessed on the Internet. Here, you will also find detailed methodological notes on the ILO labour market statistics, the labour force survey and the microcensus.
