2007: Public sector’s expenditure on culture amounts to EUR 8.1 billion


WIESBADEN – According to preliminary calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the Federation, Länder and municipalities spent slightly more than EUR 8.1 billion on culture in 2007. On the whole, the public sector spent 1.62% of its total budget on cultural activities. Thus public spending on culture accounted for 0.34% of the gross domestic product in 2007. In 2005, its share in the gross domestic product was 0.36%. 
The above and more data are provided by the Cultural Finance Report 2008, which has been compiled in co-operation with the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder, the Commissioner for Culture and the Media of the Federal Government, and the German Association of Cities and Towns. The current report is the most recent of a total of four Cultural Finance Reports which have been published by the Federal Statistical Office and the statistical offices of the Länder since 2000.
