1st half of 2008: Households put more money aside

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the World Savings Day on 30 October, households in Germany saved more money in the first six months of the year. Compared with one year earlier, the savings ratio rose by 0.5 percentage points to a current seasonally adjusted 11.3% of the disposable income. Per inhabitant an average EUR 180 was put aside every month, which is about EUR 10 more than in the past year. The total amount saved in the first half of 2008 amounted to nearly EUR 89 billion. Only in the months to come will it be possible to assess the impact which the present turmoil in the financial markets and the increasing economic uncertainties will have on the savings behaviour.
