Turnover in manufacturing in November 2008: –6.4% in real terms on a year earlier
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional data, the manufacturing sector saw turnover fall in real terms by a working-day adjusted 6.4% in November 2008 compared with November 2007 (following a revised –3.2% in October 2008). Domestic turnover decreased by 5.1% in the relevant period, revenue from business with foreign customers by 8.2%. Sales to euro area countries were 12.0% below previous year’s level, while sales to other countries were down by 4.8%. Compared with the previous month, real turnover in manufacturing – when adjusted for seasonal and working-day effects – showed an overall decrease of 4.2% in November 2008 (following a revised 0.0% in October 2008). Sales to domestic customers were down by 3.2%, turnover from business with foreign customers decreased by 5.5%. Among foreign transactions, sales to euro area countries decreased by 6.3%, while a turnover declined of 4.9% was recorded for other countries. When cumulated from January to November 2008, the (working-day adjusted) turnover in manufacturing was by 1.0% above the level of the same period a year earlier; domestic turnover rose also 1.0% and foreign turnover by a total of 0.8%.
