Consumer prices in February 2009: Presumably +1.0% on February 2008

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to rise 1.0% in February 2009 on February 2008 (January 2009: +0.9%), according to results available from six Länder.
Compared with the previous month, the rate of change will be +0.6%. The increase is mainly due to the seasonal price rise for package holidays.

The low inflation rate is mainly due to the still favourable price trend for motor fuels and liquid fuel. Compared with February 2008, motor fuel prices were down by between 12.1% and 13.9% in the six Länder, liquid fuel prices were by between 18.4% and 29.4% under previous year’s level. Compared with the previous month, different price trends were observed for mineral oil products: Motor fuel prices rose by between 0.9% and 1.9%, while liquid fuel prices fell by between 5.7% and 11.7%.

The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to increase by 1.0% from February 2008 to February 2009 (January 2009: +0.9%). Compared with the previous month, the index will be up 0.7%.

The final results for February 2009 will be released on 10 March.
