Consumption expenditure in Germany much lower than in the United States of America


WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the International Consumer Day on 15 March, the level of average consumption expenditure in Germanyis considerably lower than in the United States of America. Expenditures were EUR 17 073 per inhabitant in Germanyin 2008 compared with EUR 22 457 in the United States.
 
Households in Germany increased their consumption expenditure by more than 15% in 2008 against 2000 at current prices (2008 compared with 2007: +2.1%). In the United States of America the corresponding rise was nearly 50% (2008 against 2007: +3.6%). There is a similar picture also after price adjustment, that is after the different price developments in the two countries have been eliminated. While private consumption expenditure per inhabitant rose only by a total 2.1% in Germanyin the years 2000 to 2008, the corresponding increase was 13.9% in the United States. Compared with 2007, price-adjusted per capita expenditure rose 0.1% in Germanyin 2008, in the United Statesit was down 0.6%.
