April 2009: Number of persons in employment down by 130,000 on a year earlier

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 39.96 million in April 2009. Compared with a year earlier, that was a decrease by 130,000 persons (–0.3%). Hence the economic crisis has a growing impact on the labour market. The wider utilisation of cyclical short-term work, however, reduced the negative effects of the recession on the employment trend.

Compared with March 2009, the number of persons in employment was up by 68,000 persons (+0.2%) in April. Compared with earlier years, that is an unusually small increase, which seems to indicate that the usual labour market upturn in spring will be small this year. In the last five years, the number of persons in employment rose by an average 164,000 persons from March to April.

When seasonally adjusted, that is when eliminating the typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment in Germanywas 40.12 million in April 2009. That was a seasonally adjusted decrease by 39,000 persons (–0.1%) on March.
