Limited parenting skills - main reason for educational assistance provided in residential homes

Press release No. 242 / 2009-06-30  For a total of 28,700 children, juveniles or young adults, educational assistance measures in homes or other forms of sheltered housing began in 2007. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was a 17% increase on a year earlier. The relevant proportion of young adults amounted to about 8%.


Increasing financial deficit of the overall public budget

Press release No. 241 / 2009-06-30  The financial deficit of the overall public budget reached EUR 37.8 billion in the first quarter of 2009. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results of the cash statistics of the overall public budget. The financial deficit (as defined in public finance statistics), which is calculated as the difference between revenue and expenditure and includes the balance of internal offsetting items, thus rose by EUR 15.8 billion compared with the first quarter of the previous year (EUR 22.0 billion). The largest increase was observed in the financial deficit of the Länder, which climbed by EUR 10.6 billion to EUR 13.3 billion.


May 2009: Labour market upturn in spring is weak this year

Press release No. 240 / 2009-06-30  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 40.05 million in May 2009. Compared with a year earlier, that was a decrease by 147,000 persons (–0.4%).


Producer prices of services decreasing in 1st quarter of 2009

Press release No. 239 / 2009-06-29  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), producer prices of services continued to decrease in the first quarter of 2009. Sharp year-on-year falls were recorded for sea transport prices: Freight rates in sea and coastal water transport of goods were markedly down by 33.5% as a result of the worldwide economic downturn and of lower fuel prices. The producer price index for cargo handling was 0.1% lower than in the first quarter of 2008. In freight transport by road, prices rose by just 1.3% in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the same quarter a year earlier (4th quarter of 2008  +3.9% on a year earlier). Over the same period, the prices of services in rail freight transport were up 2.0%, while prices of postal and courier activities decreased 0.9%.


Consumer prices in June 2009: Presumably +0.1% on June 2008

Press release No. 238 / 2009-06-26  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to rise 0.1% in June 2009 compared with June 2008 (May 2009: +/–0.0%), according to results available from six Länder. Compared with the previous month, the index will be up by 0.4%.


Agreed earnings have been up more strongly in France than in Germany for five years

Press release No. 237 / 2009-06-26  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), agreed monthly earnings of employees in 2008 were up on average by 2.8% on a year earlier in Germany and by 3.1% in France. Hence, average increases in earnings in Germany were smaller than in France for the fifth year in a row. The harmonised consumer price index in 2008 was up 2.8% both in Germany and in France.


Import prices in May 2009: –10.4% on May 2008

Press release No. 236 / 2009-06-26  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the index of import prices decreased by 10.4% in May 2009 from the corresponding month of the preceding year.This was the highest price decline since February 1987 (–12.6%). In April 2009 and in March 2009 the annual rates of change were –8.6% and –7.1%, respectively. From April to May 2009 the index did not change.


14% more cases in which children were placed under custody by youth welfare offices in 2008

Press release No. 234 / 2009-06-25  In 2008, youth welfare offices placed 32,300 children and juveniles under custody, which was about 4,100 (+14.4%) more than in 2007. Compared with 2005, the increase was 26%, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).


Building industry in April 2009: Value of orders received down 12.3% from the previous year

Press release No. 233 / 2009-06-25  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the total price-adjusted value of orders received by building construction and civil and underground engineering enterprises in Germany decreased 12.3% in April 2009 from the same month of the previous year. In building construction demand decreased 25.9%, in civil and underground engineering it increased 4.1%.


Assistance according to the Upgrading Training Assistance Act, 2008: More persons receiving assistance in Germany

Press release No. 232 / 2009-06-24  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), just under 140,000 persons received benefits according to the Upgrading Training Assistance Act last year. Following decreases over two years, the number of persons receiving such assistance was up for the first time again (+4.4%). In 2008, a total of some EUR 382 million of assistance was granted in 2008, which was 7% more than in the previous year.


1st quarter of 2009: Real earnings down 0.4%

Press release No. 231 / 2009-06-23  According to results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), real earnings in the first quarter of 2009 were down 0.4% compared with the same quarter of the previous year. This is the result of the index of real earnings, which has been calculated for the first time; it compares the development of earnings with the price trend. The decrease in real earnings is mainly due to the small increase in earnings (+0.4%). Major reasons were the decline in extra payments, which were down by 7.9% compared with the first quarter of 2008. In the same period, the basic remuneration, that is gross monthly earnings excluding extra payments, rose by 1.5%.


Exports in 1st quarter of 2009: –21.2% on a year earlier

Press release No. 230 / 2009-06-23  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), total German exports in the first quarter of 2009 were down by 21.2% compared with the same quarter of 2008 to EUR 199.0 billion.


Further decrease in public service staff in 2008

Press release No. 229 / 2009-06-22  Tomorrow, 23 June, will be the international Public Service Day. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on this occasion, 4.5 million people were employed in public service in Germany in mid-2008; ten years earlier, the figure was nearly 5.1 million. Compared with the previous year, the number of staff was down by 35,500 or 0.8%; in 2008 again, this was mainly due to the continuing changeover of municipal hospitals to a private legal form.


More casualties on German roads in April 2009

Press release No. 228 / 2009-06-19  April 2009 was the first month this year in which more people died in traffic accidents on roads in Germanythan in the same month of the previous year. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 382 people lost their lives, that was 20 persons or 5.5% more than in April 2008. The number of persons injured was 34,700, which was 5.7% more than a year earlier. The police recorded 187,400 road traffic accidents, which was 3.5% less than in April 2008. While the number of accidents involving only material damage was down by 5.0% to 160,100, the number of accidents involving personal injury rose by 6.1% to 27,200.


Producer prices May 2009: –3.6% on May 2008

Press release No. 227 / 2009-06-19  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the index of producer prices for industrial products (domestic sales) for Germany fell by 3.6% in May 2009 from the corresponding month of the preceding year. This was the lowest year-on-year-rate since April 1987 (–3.7%). In April 2009, the annual rate of change was -2.7%.


Turnover in the hotel and restaurant industry in April 2009: –7.0% in real terms to April 2008

Press release No. 226 / 2009-06-17  According to results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), turnover in the German hotel and restaurant industry in April 2009 decreased 4.7% in nominal terms and 7.0% in real terms compared with the corresponding month in the previous year.


Number of employees in manufacturing decreasing by 1.7% in April 2009

Press release No. 225 / 2009-06-16  At the end of April 2009, 5.1 million persons worked in local units of manufacturing with 50 or more employees. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that were about 86,000 persons or 1.7% less than in April 2008. The number of hours worked in April 2009 decreased 16.8% from a year earlier, reaching 612 million.


3.7% more start-ups of larger businesses in the first quarter of 2009

Press release No. 224 / 2009-06-15  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office, 42,000 larger businesses were started-up in Germany in the first quarter of 2009 (+3.7% from the corresponding period of the preceding year). The number of deregistrations of larger businesses increased by 7.7% to 37,000 over the same period.


Markedly fewer naturalisations in 2008

Press release No. 223 / 2009-06-12  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), about 94,500 foreigners were naturalised in Germany in the course of 2008. That were a good 16,800 fewer naturalisations than in the previous year (–15%). Hence the number of naturalisations reached its lowest level since German unification. Naturalisations peaked in 2000 when the new citizenship law was introduced. In that year, about 186,700 persons were naturalised – nearly twice as many as in 2008.


Wholesale prices in May 2009: –8.9% on May 2008

Press release No. 222 / 2009-06-12  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the index of selling prices in wholesale trade was down 8.9% in May 2009 on a year earlier. Compared with April 2009, the index of wholesale prices rose by 0.1% in May 2009.


10% more business insolvencies in the first quarter of 2009

Press release No. 221 / 2009-06-10  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in the first quarter of 2009, German insolvency courts reported 39,004 insolvencies, 24,106 of them referred to consumers and 7,712 to enterprises. Without the results of Nordrhein-Westfalen the total number of insolvencies increased 0.4% compared with the first quarter of 2008, consumer insolvencies decreased 2.4% and insolvencies of enterprises increased 10.0%.


Accommodation in internal tourism in April 2009: 7% more overnights

Press release No. 220 / 2009-06-10  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of overnights in accommodation establishments with 9 or more beds and in tourist campsites in Germanyincreased by 7% to 28.2 million in April 2009, compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year.


1st quarter of 2009: Extra payments in banks down by one third

Press release No. 219 / 2009-06-10  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), extra payments made to full-time employees in banks in the first quarter of 2009 were down by an average EUR 1,506 or 36.4% compared with the same quarter a year earlier. Average total gross monthly earnings of bank employees, including extra payments, decreased by 5.2% on the same quarter of the previous year.


Turnover in manufacturing in April 2009: –23.2% in real terms on a year earlier

Press release No. 218 / 2009-06-10  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional data, the manufacturing sector saw turnover fall in real terms by a working-day adjusted 23.2% in April 2009 compared with April 2008 (following a revised –22.0% in March 2009). Domestic turnover decreased by 17.3% in the relevant period, revenue from business with foreign customers by 29.8%. Sales to euro area countries were 28.0% below previous year’s level, while sales to other countries went down by 31.2%.


Consumer prices in May 2009: 0.0% on May 2008

Press release No. 217 / 2009-06-10  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany in May 2009 was at the same level as in May 2008. The inflation rate (0.0%) thus reached its lowest level in 22 years (last time in May 1987± 0.0%). In April 2009, it was 0.7%. Compared with April 2009, the index was down by 0.1%. The estimate for May 2009 was thus confirmed.
