Consumer prices in June 2009: Presumably +0.1% on June 2008
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to rise 0.1% in June 2009 compared with June 2008 (May 2009: +/–0.0%), according to results available from six Länder. Compared with the previous month, the index will be up by 0.4%.
Compared with the previous month, the prices of liquid fuel and motor fuels were markedly up in June. Depending on the Land, motor fuel prices rose by between 3.9% and 5.1%, liquid fuel prices by between 5.1% and 8.6%. Compared with June 2008, however, they were still considerably lower (motor fuels: –14.9% to –16.3%; liquid fuel: –35.2% to –41.3%). Tobacco prices, too, increased considerably on the previous month. In June, they were by 4.5% higher than in May 2009 and by 4.7% above the level of June 2008. For the first time since January 2009, an increase in food prices was recorded. Compared with May 2009, there were by between 0.1% and 0.5% higher, although they were still by between 0.4% and 2.1% below June 2008 levels.
The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to remain unchanged from June 2008 to June 2009 (May 2009: +/–0.0%). Compared with the previous month, the index will be up by 0.4%.
The final results for June 2009 will be released on 9 July.
