Limited parenting skills - main reason for educational assistance provided in residential homes
WIESBADEN – For a total of 28,700 children, juveniles or young adults, educational assistance measures in homes or other forms of sheltered housing began in 2007. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was a 17% increase on a year earlier. The relevant proportion of young adults amounted to about 8%. Since 2007, youth welfare offices have enquired about the reasons for accommodating young people in a home or other form of sheltered housing. In addition to the main reason, up to two other reasons may be indicated for necessary educational assistance. In the reference year, limited parenting skills were indicated most frequently (43%) as the reason why young people were accommodated in a home. In 35% of all cases, noticeable problems in social behaviour and in 24% of the cases school or workplace problems of young people were given as reasons. Danger to the wellbeing of children or inadequate support and care for children and juveniles played an important role, too (each accounted for 22%).
