June 2009: slight decline in employment figures

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 40.10 million in June 2009. Compared with a year earlier, that was a decrease of 81,000 persons (–0.2%).

The month-on-month figures, too, show a decline in June on May 2009. Actually, the number of persons in employment decreased by 34,000 (–0.1%). Between 2003 and 2008, however, an average increase of 60,000 persons each was observed between May and June. The less favourable employment trend this year must be considered in the context of the currently weak overall economic situation.

After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment in Germanywas 40.15 million in June 2009. That was a seasonally adjusted decrease of 42,000 persons (–0.1%) on May.

As part of the regular revision of national accounts, the provisional monthly, quarterly and annual employment results were also recalculated from the year 2005. All additional sources of employment statistics that had become available by the time of the current calculation were incorporated into the employment accounts. The recalculation resulted in a slightly more positive trend of the employment figures than previously reported for the months from January 2009. For that period, the figures relating to the development in the preceding year had to be revised upwards by 0.3 to 0.4 percentage points. The current results show that, since 2005, a year-on-year decline in employment was for the first time recorded in May 2009 (previously indicated for March 2009). As regards the earlier revision period until December 2008, however, the figures had to be slightly revised downwards (by a maximum of –0.1 percentage points) compared to the results published before.

More monthly results, including the number of unemployed according to an internationally comparable concept, can be accessed on the Internet. Here, you will also find detailed methodological notes on the ILO labour market statistics, the labour force survey and the microcensus.
