German exports in June 2009: –22.3% on June 2008

WIESBADEN – According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany exported commodities to the value of EUR 68.5 billion and imported commodities to the value of EUR 56.3 billion in June 2009. Hence, German exports of June 2009 were 22.3% and imports 17.2% lower than in June 2008. Upon calendar and seasonal adjustment, exports climbed 7.0% and imports 6.8% on May 2009.

The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of EUR 12.2 billion in June 2009. In June 2008, the surplus amounted to EUR 20.1 billion. Upon calendar and seasonal adjustment, the foreign trade balance recorded a surplus of EUR 11.0 billion in June 2009.

According to provisional results of the Deutsche Bundesbank, the current account of the balance of payments showed a surplus of EUR 13.3 billion in June 2009, which included the balance of services (– EUR 2.4 billion), factor income net (+ EUR 4.6 billion), current transfers (– EUR 0.1 billion), and supplementary trade items (– EUR 1.1 billion). In June 2008, the German current account showed a surplus of EUR 19.5 billion.

In June 2009, Germany dispatched commodities to the value of EUR 43.8 billion to the Member States of the European Union (EU), while it received commodities to the value of EUR 37.8 billion from those countries. Compared with June 2008, dispatches to and arrivals from the EU countries decreased by 22.1% and 15.8%, respectively. Commodities to the value of EUR 30.3 billion (–20.1%) were dispatched to the euro area countries in June 2009, while the value of the commodities received from those countries was EUR 26.6 billion (–16.0%). In June 2009, commodities to the value of EUR 13.5 billion (–26.3%) were dispatched to countries not belonging to the euro area, while the value of the commodities which arrived from those countries was EUR 11.1 billion (–15.4%).

Exports of commodities to countries outside the European Union (third countries) amounted to EUR 24.7 billion in June 2009, while imports from those countries amounted to EUR 18.5 billion. Compared with June 2008, exports to third countries decreased by 22.4%, and imports from those countries by 19.8%.
