Consumer prices in August 2009 presumably at previous year’s level


WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to remain unchanged (0.0%) in August 2009 compared with August 2008, according to results available from six Länder. In July 2009, the consumer price index was down by 0.5% on July 2008. Compared with July 2009, the index will be up 0.2% in August 2009.
 
Following a short decrease in July 2009, the prices of liquid fuel and motor fuels rose again on the previous month. Depending on the Land concerned, motor fuel prices increased between 4.4% and 5.6% and liquid fuel prices were up between 6.4% and 11.8%. Compared with August 2008, prices of mineral oil products were markedly lower (motor fuels: –10.3% to –11.5%; liquid fuel: –26.2% to –34.5%). Food prices fell again between 0.9% and 1.7% on July 2009. Compared with August 2008, food prices were down between 2.6% and 4.0%.
 
The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to remain unchanged in August 2009 from August 2008 (July 2009: –0.7%). Compared with the previous month, the index will be up by 0.4%.
 
The final results for August 2009 will be released on 9 September.
