July 2009: continued moderate decline in employment figures

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40 million in July 2009. Compared with a year earlier, that was a decrease of 150,000 persons (–0.4%).

The month-on-month figures, too, show a decline in July on June 2009. The number of persons in employment decreased by 98,000 (–0.2%). After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment in Germanywas 40.11 million in July 2009. That was a seasonally adjusted decrease of 34,000 persons (–0.1%) on June. In June 2009, the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment declined by 44,000 (–0.1%) on May.
Against the background of the economic crisis, the decline in the employment figures observed for several months was again moderate. Probably, the fact that employees took short-term work again reduced the negative effects of the short-term economic trend on employment.
