Consumer prices in September 2009: Presumably –0.3% on September 2008


WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to decline 0.3% in September 2009 compared with September 2008, according to results available from five Länder (August 2009: +/–0.0%). In July 2009, the consumer price index was already lower than in July 2008 (–0.5%). Compared with August 2009, the index will be down 0.4% in September 2009.
 
Following a short increase in August 2009, the prices of liquid fuel and motor fuels declined on the previous month. Depending on the Land concerned, motor fuel prices fell by between 2.4% and 3.6%, liquid fuel prices by between 3.6% and 6.0%. Compared with September 2008, prices of mineral oil products were markedly lower (motor fuels: –12.4% to –14.9%; liquid fuel: –28.4% to –35.1%). Food prices decreased slightly again from August 2009. Compared with September 2008, food prices fell by 2.7% to 3.9%.
 
The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to decrease by 0.4% in September 2009 on September 2008 (August 2009 on August 2008: –0.1%). Compared with the preceding month, the index will be down by 0.4% in September.
 
The final results for September 2009 will be released on 9 October.
