Continuing slight decline in employment figures in August 2009

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 40.01 million in August 2009. Compared with the previous year, this was a decrease of 216,000, or 0.5%.

As compared with July 2009, there was hardly any change: The number of persons in employment rose slightly by 11,000 (0.0%). After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment dropped by 57,000 (–0.1%) from July to August 2009. In July 2009, the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment had declined by 30,000 (–0.1%) on June.

Against the background of the economic crisis, the decline in the employment figures observed for several months was again moderate. Probably, the fact that many employees were placed on short-time work still reduced the negative effects of the short-term economic trend on employment.
