Consumer prices in October 2009: Probably unchanged on October 2008
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to remain unchanged (0.0%) in October 2009 compared with October 2008, according to results available from six Länder. In September 2009, the consumer price index was down by 0.3% on September 2008. Compared with September 2009, the index will be up 0.1% in October 2009. Compared with the previous month, different trends were observed for the prices of liquid fuel and motor fuels. Following a short decrease in September, liquid fuel prices in October 2009 rose between 1.5% and 8.9% on the previous month, depending on the Land. Compared with October 2008, however, liquid fuel prices are still lower by between 21.1% and 28.8%. Motor fuel prices changed by between –0.3% and +1.9% on September 2009, depending on the Land, and are still 4.5% to 8.2% below the level of October 2008. Food prices decreased slightly again from September 2009 in five Länder (–0.2% to –0.5%), only Bayern recorded a slight increase by 0.3%. Compared with October 2008, food prices fell by 2.8% to 4.3%. The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to remain unchanged from October 2008 to October 2009 (0.0%; September 2009: –0.5% on September 2008). Compared with the preceding month, the index will be up by 0.2% in October. The final results for October 2009 will be released on 10 November 2009.
