September 2009: Number of persons in employment declining by 200,000 (–0.5%)

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 40.36 million in September 2009. Compared with the previous year, this was a decrease of 202,000 or 0.5%.

Compared to August 2009, the number of persons in employment rose by 269,000 or 0.7%. This was a seasonal increase in employment at the end of the summer break and the beginning of the new training year. As a result of the economic crisis, however, the typical increase in employment in autumn was smaller in September this year than the average increase recorded over the past five years (+327,000 or +0.8%). After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment declined by 33,000 or 0.1% in September on August 2009.

In addition to the first calculation of the number of persons in employment for reference month September 2009, the monthly employment results published so far were recalculated back to January 2009. To this end, all data of employment statistics sources which became available at the time of computation were analysed. The recalculation led to year-on-year rates of change which, at the level of the economy as a whole, were up by not more than 0.2 percentage points from the previous status of computation.
