WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), women in Germany earned an average Euro 14.51 per hour in 2008, which was Euro 4.39 less than the amount earned by their male colleagues. So the gender pay gap, which is the percentage difference in average gross hourly earnings between women and men, was a constant 23%, as it was in the previous years. Slight changes are observed in eastern and western Germany: While the gender pay gap in the former territory of the Federal Republic rose from 24% to 25%, it was down from 6% to 5% in the new Länder.
