Day care for children under 3 years: 275,000 places to be created by 2013
WIESBADEN – In Germany some 275,000 additional places for children under three years will be needed by 2013 in order to be able to offer day care for 35% of the children under three years all over Germany. This is shown by a model calculation by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), which is based on the results of the 2009 statistics of day care for children and the results of the 12th co-ordinated with the statistical offices of the Länder population projection of the Federal Statistical Office that were presented 2 days ago. The target that day care places should be offered for 35% of the children under three years in the whole of Germany was agreed upon by the Federation, Länder, municipalities and welfare associations at the “créche summit” in April 2007. As demand will differ between regions, achievement at the regional level may be markedly above or below the federal target of 35%.
