41.8 million surgeries and medical procedures performed on in-patients in 2008
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), about 41.8 million surgeries and medical procedures were performed on patients discharged from hospital after full in-patient treatment in 2008. The figure is 5.2% higher than in 2007. Every hospital case thus accounted for an average 2.5 measures of that kind. One third of the measures performed in 2008 were surgeries (13.7 million), followed by non-surgical therapeutic measures with a share of 27.2% (11.4 million) and diagnostic measures with 21.1% (8.8 million). The remainder was made up of medical imaging (6.2 million), supplementary measures such as postnatal newborn care (1.4 million) and the administration of medication (0.3 million).
