October 2009: Number of persons in employment continues its moderate decrease

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 40.51 million in October 2009. Compared with the previous year, this was a decrease of 260,000 persons or 0.6%.

The monthly number of persons in employment has been below the level of the relevant period a year earlier for four months now. Altogether, the decrease observed can still be described as moderate. A massive slump on the German labour market resulting from the general economic crisis has not occurred in October 2009, either, a major reason being the measures taken in terms of labour market and short-term economic policies.

Compared to September 2009, the number of persons in employment rose by 157,000 or 0.4%. After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, the number of persons in employment declined by 29,000 or 0.1% in October on September 2009.
