Press release No.003 / 2010-01-05

Number of persons in employment continues to fall in November 2009

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.41 million in November 2009. That is a decline by 332,000 persons or 0.8% against November 2008.

Compared with October 2009, the number of persons in employment was down by 47,000 (–0.1%) in November 2009. After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, the decline against the preceding month amounts to 19,000 persons. So the general economic crisis did not cause a massive slump on the German labour market in November 2009, either.

Beyond the first calculation of the number of persons in employment for the present reference month of November 2009, the monthly employment results published so far have been revised from May 2009. This was done in the course of preparing a first provisional estimate of the result for 2009 as a whole (see press release no. 01/2010 of 4 January 2010). The recalculations produced rates of change against one year earlier which deviate downwards from the former calculations by a maximum of 0.2 percentage points at the overall economic level.

Annual results and more monthly results, including the number of unemployed according to an internationally comparable concept, can be accessed on the Internet. Here, you will also find detailed methodological notes on the ILO labour market statistics, the labour force survey and the microcensus.
