Consumer prices in January 2010: Presumably +0.8% on January 2009
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany is expected to rise 0.8% in January 2010 on January 2009 (December 2009: +0.9% on December 2008), according to results available so far. Compared with December 2009, the consumer price index will be down 0.6% in January 2010. This is mainly due to seasonal price decreases for package holidays (–18.8%) and holiday homes (–32.7%).
Liquid fuel and motor fuels were more expensive again compared with December 2009. Liquid fuel prices in January 2010 rose by between 4.9% and 9.1% and motor fuel prices by between 2.8% and 5.0% on December 2009, depending on the Land. Compared with January 2009, however, liquid fuel prices increased by up to 8.7% and motor fuel prices by up to 15.7%. Gas prices changed just slightly (–0.3% to +0.9%) in January 2010 on December 2009; compared with January 2009 they fell by between 16.3% and 22.2%. Food prices rose slightly (+0.5% to +1.9%) from December 2009. Compared with January 2009, however, food is still cheaper (+/–0.0% to –2.4%).
The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, is expected to increase by 0.7% from January 2009 to January 2010 (December 2009: +0.8% on December 2008). Compared with the previous month, the index will be down 0.7% in January 2010.
