Turnover in manufacturing in December 2009: –6.0% in real terms on December 2008
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional data, the manufacturing sector saw turnover fall in real terms by a working-day adjusted 6.0% in December 2009 compared with December 2008 (following a revised –9.6% in November 2009). Domestic turnover decreased by 6.6% in the relevant period, revenue from business with foreign customers by 5.2%. Sales to euro area countries were 5.7% below previous year’s level, while sales to other countries went down by 4.8%. Compared with the preceding month, real turnover in manufacturing showed a total decrease of 2.0% in December 2009 after having been adjusted for seasonal fluctuations and working-day variations (revised +0.3% in November 2009). Decreases were observed in domestic sales (–3.3%); turnover from business with foreign customers declined by 0.2%. Among foreign transactions, sales to euro area countries increased 0.5%, while a turnover decreased of 0.7% was recorded for other foreign countries. For the year of 2009 the (working-day adjusted) turnover in manufacturing was 17.0% below the level of the same period of the previous year; domestic turnover declined 13.9% and foreign turnover by a total of 20.5%.
